In the landscape of the Ghost Forest the wild horse is a unique wild animal, distinct from its feral and domestic cousins. Largely believed to be escapees from ranches, logging or mining, the wild horse numbers about 700 in all of Alberta, and is as misunderstood – and as wild – as the grizzly bear. This exhibition includes six drawings and seven paintings and presents the wild horse and its habitat as being sacred to the landscape – from spurs to freedom!

The area in which I study the wild horses supports two wolf packs that co-exist with cattle, grizzly and black bear, as well as the full range of ungulates. It is a mixture of boreal forest and marshland, the sponge of Calgary’s watershed.  These wild horses have been there since the 1920s. They have copied behavior of deer and learned to co-habit with the wolves in order to survive in their wild landscape.  It is not an island, but is strategically located adjacent to land of The Stoney Nakoda Nation.

On June 20th - 26 2013, my new book, Wild Horses, Wild Wolves: Legends at Risk at the Foot of the Canadian Rockies will be released by Rocky Mountain Books at a launch at Masters Gallery Ltd., Calgary , Alberta, Canada . See
