Kamchatka, Russian Far East
Through The Eyes of The Bear
Curatorial Introduction, Ewa Sniatycka, Art Gallery of Calgary Guest Curator, 2000 Catalogue
“Enns’ fascination with the grizzly continued leading her to the southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. This remote environment supports more bears per square kilometer than anywhere else on earth. It is here that Maureen Enns and her (former) partner, writer Charles Russell, have traveled for the last 4 years to study and live amongst the bears of Kamchatka. Their goal was to uncover the
bears’ true nature in an environment where fear had not been learned as a result of human/bear interactions. A vital component of the study
was the reintroduction of 3 orphaned grizzly cubs by Maureen and Charles to the wild. These young bears have become the subject of Enns’ recent work. ”
