In 2006 I rode on a horse trip into a remote area of the Salta region of Northern Argentina. It was surreal riding through cacti higher than the horses only to ascend onto a plateau – the Altai Plano or high grassland meadows of the gaucho and his cattle. Leaving the area the guide mentioned a hidden cave with pictographs done during the time of the Inca civilization in the 15th and 16th century. I had recently seen a few wild horses in the Ghost Forest and realized very few things of cultural and historical value are treasured until they have long disappeared. Such was the case with the Inca Civilization and was likely to be the case with the wild horses of the Ghost Forest.
